Kykx 1057’s first Disc Jockey Remembered

Today we say goodbye to a dear radio friend, Gary Mason. Gary went to be with his Father Easter morning at age 72. He leaves his wife of 40 years Carla, 5 children and numerous ones who loved him dearly!

Gary was the foundational DJ when KYKX 1057 signed on the air in July of 1974. His rich baritone voice and tremendous heart tirelessly worked benefits across East Texas. Once, he and a lone sponsor raised $60,000 in one night at the old Reo Palm Isle for a young man with medical trouble.

At KYKX during the formation of the original Big Bass Classic, the “Hands On A Hardbody” Truck Giveaway and the beginning of the Great Texas Balloon Race, Gary cherished engaging in the annual “Toys for Tots” drive.

My daughter Tana recalled him playfully squeezing above her knee when she was little calling it his “Gary bite”. He called himself and everyone else “Bonehead”. He was a soft hearted goofball full of much broadcast talent. We will miss our favorite Bonehead!
